Who I Am

Hello! I’m Kendra, an expert on work/life balance + the creator of Having What Matters.

I started my company because I know, from personal experience, just how devastating it can be to your health, your relationships and your career when your life is out of alignment — like no matter how hard you try, you’re never “caught up” or doing “enough.”

After decades of painful perfectionism — earning a Master’s degree in Social Work, a law degree, and launching my first business while balancing kids and a full-time career — I started to crumble apart.

It was a bleak and frustrating time. I thought I was doing “everything right” — loading up my plate with big, important goals, pushing myself to achieve as much as I possibly could, serving and giving to everyone in my life.

But clearly, something wasn’t right — because despite my best intentions, my quality of life and my quality of work were both suffering.

Striving to “have it all” was crushing my soul.

I just didn’t realize that there was another option.

It took several years — and conversations with hundreds of high-achieving women, like me — but eventually, I realized that having-it-all-itis is a national epidemic.

And through those honest conversations, I had the “a ha!” moment that changed everything:

True success isn’t about “having it all.”

It’s about having what matters.

And with that, my new company — Having What Matters — was born.

Today, I work full-time as the Director of Career Services & Professional Development at a private law school in the Midwest. And when I’m not working there, I’m at the helm of Having What Matters: building my body of work as a coach, public speaker and seminar leader, designing experiences for companies that care about their employee’s health + wellbeing just as much as the bottom line.

As the voice behind Having What Matters — and, who knows? Maybe your future coach or workshop leader! — I’ve got one question for you:

What’s it going to take to love your work + your life, every day?

Let’s find out.

I’m here to help.

Oh, and hey! Since you made it this far …

Here are 10 quirky, delightful + totally true things about me:

1. I’m a pianist, and I’ve been a professional church organist since I was 11 years old. I have enormous hands.

2. I like big black dogs, and we currently have a Labrador Retriever and a German Shepherd. They think they are Chihuahuas.

3. When I was five, I wrote that I wanted to be either a princess or a nun when I grew up. Read into that what you will.

4. I have one beautiful biological daughter and one equally beautiful daughter adopted from Colombia.

5. I back-packed around Europe by myself during grad school. I also made the mistake of buying my dad a lead crystal souvenir in the first city I visited, which I then had to carry around for two weeks in my backpack.

6. My husband is a Lutheran pastor, and we are both Swedish. I am a walking Minnesotan metaphor, complete with the requisite accent.

7. I grew up in a tiny town (population 950) in northern Illinois with no stoplights. I have always considered stopping at stop signs optional (because there was never anyone coming.) That has subsequently gotten me into trouble with the law.

8. I’ve always been a bit of an overachiever, and I remember other girls kicking the back of my chair and mocking me during an awards ceremony in high school when I got yet another award. Ladies — let’s support one another when we achieve!

9. I was President of the student body in graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. I never had felt like I fit in with my peers prior to graduate school, but in grad school my husband called me “Queen of the Nerds” (and I wear the name “nerd” with great pride.)

10. My love of people runs so deep that when I see them in great pain or in great joy, my heart goes out to them. And I usually tear up, so I always keep tissues handy.
